Study finds lower environmental costs in chemical, power industries

An annual survey of environmental expenditure by industry is feasible and should be carried out by the Government, according to a report commissioned by the Department of the Environment (DoE).1 The study, which has provided the first empirical data on environmental spending by the main sectors of UK industry, has also highlighted many inconsistencies in reporting of spending levels - and suggests that the chemical and electricity industries in particular have inflated their reported environmental expenditures.
