"Unsustainable" energy trends in EC road transport

The price of road fuel relative to household income has dropped by almost 40% across most of the EC since 1980, helping to feed a 40% increase in per capita fuel consumption, according to a Eurostat report.1 Branding this trend "unsustainable", the paper also calls into question the environmental justification for the large duty differentials in favour of diesel in almost all EC countries.
