Threat to wetlands from water abstraction

About 9% of freshwater wetland Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs) in England are threatened by abstractions for water supply and agriculture, according to a report by English Nature.1 Although not in total agreement, the Environment Agency has responded by promising to review the impacts of abstraction on wildlife sites.
