Landfill restoration problems from shift to "bioreactors"

The difficulties of reconciling the Government's policy shift towards "bioreactor" landfills with other policy goals have been underlined by a draft Waste Management Paper (WMP) on landfill restoration and aftercare.1 The paper proposes a new category of "interim" restoration which will mean that such sites may not be fully restored for years while gas and liquid controls remain in need of active management, and also places less emphasis on restoring landfills to agriculture.
