Minister outlines changes to environmental assessment rules

Changes to the UK's approach to environmental assessment of major projects were foreshadowed in a speech by Environment Minister Robert Jones on 24 September. Driven largely by EC legislation, they will at least include the wider use of quantitative thresholds for use by planning authorities when deciding whether "Annex II" projects should be subject to assessment - although more radical changes in this area have not yet been ruled out.
