Breaches of EC environmental rules remain commonplace

Public complaints of breaches of EC environmental laws continued at a high level in 1995, and suspected infringements of EC rules were higher in the environmental field than in any other area of law except the Internal Market, according to the European Commission's latest annual report on the application of Community laws.1 The Commission insists it is succeeding in improving compliance with environmental Directives, but there is some evidence that it may be slackening the pressure on Member States.
