MEPs' shot across the bows on "repatriation" of EC water rules

The twenty-year contest between discharge limits and quality objectives as the best basis for EC water pollution control policy moved into another round on 23 October when the European Parliament accused the Commission of "spectacularly missing its main goal" in its plans for a framework Directive on water resources. Parliament also signalled that it will oppose moves to allow Member States greater freedom to set their own water quality standards.
