German industries follow Dutch in volunteering CO2 reductions

Fifteen sectors of German industry have signed an agreement with the Government to cut their emissions of carbon dioxide by around 20% by 2005. The move mirrors similar pledges by 22 sectors of Dutch industry since 1991. But in the UK, despite urging from its Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment (ACBE), the Government has failed to stimulate any such moves, awaking concerns that UK firms will fall behind in the gathering international drive to develop energy-efficient processes and products.
