Appliance industry obstructs EC drive on energy efficiency

The European Commission has confirmed that it has stopped work on a series of Directives to impose minimum energy efficiency standards for appliances. The initiative was a major plank of its policy to promote energy conservation and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and its failure appears due entirely to lobbying by manufacturers. Instead, the Commission is now trying to negotiate voluntary agreements even though this approach got nowhere with refrigerator manufacturers.
