Officials make progress on amendment of Seveso Directive

Negotiations on an EC proposal to amend the 1982 Seveso Directive on major industrial hazards have advanced rapidly this spring, but agreement on the legislation by Environment Ministers could be delayed until the autumn. An important amendment which appears to have broad support would lower the threshold quantities that would bring sites holding chemicals classed as dangerous to the environment within its scope.
