Fines for Shell and Whitbread over sewage discharges
Two major companies, Shell and Whitbread, have been ordered to pay over £45,000 following a National Rivers Authority (NRA) crackdown on private sewage treatment works. Private works are significant sources of water pollution and accounted for more pollution incidents in 1993 than sewage works operated by water companies.
