Treasury told to play its part in sustainable development
Two major recommendations have emerged from a year-long House of Lords inquiry into the Government's sustainable development strategy.1 The Treasury has been urged to take a more active role in environmental policy and in greening the tax system, and the Government has been urged to develop a much wider range of targets for sustainable development. The Lords report also makes well-aimed criticisms of the Government's climate change programme, and of its failure to lay down clear rules for the regulators of privatised utilities to promote environmental policy objectives.
