Progress in talks on hazardous waste shipments

The first steps have been taken towards drawing up lists of wastes considered hazardous under the Basel Convention on transboundary movement of hazardous wastes. The process should alleviate the confusion surrounding last year's decision to ban exports of hazardous waste from OECD to non-OECD countries from 1998. Environmental groups believe the process is heading in the right direction - but waste traders say it is fundamentally flawed.
