Waste regulators fear lack of cash despite hike in charges

A 15% increase in the annual "subsistence" charges paid by businesses holding waste management licences was announced belatedly by the Department of the Environment (DoE) on 10 August.1 A similar increase is likely next year. But waste regulators claim that they will still be left badly short of money for their policing activities when they transfer to the Environment Agency next April.
