Tough air quality standard proposed for SO<SUB>2</SUB>

An official panel has recommended a health-based air quality standard (AQS) for sulphur dioxide considerably more stringent than existing guidelines - and one which is widely exceeded across the UK.1 The proposal goes with the grain of existing measures to reduce SO2 emissions. But it will strengthen calls for HM Inspectorate of Pollution (HMIP) to take a tough line over the upgrading of existing power stations, and may also turn the spotlight on smaller coal and oil-fired industrial plant.
