Brussels moves to cut CO<SUB>2</SUB> emissions by curbing demand for energy

Moves to force electricity and gas supply companies to help customers reduce their demand for energy instead of building their businesses on expanding energy sales were initiated with a draft Directive agreed by the European Commission on 20 September. The proposal could play a major long-term role in helping the EC to reduce its carbon dioxide emissions - but is already being opposed by gas and electricity utilities.
