Eco-profiles of surfactants

European surfactants producers have published a life-cycle inventory (LCI) study which provides a useful benchmark for companies.1 They claim that it demonstrates that there are no grounds for suggesting that any one surfactant, whether made from petrochemicals or renewable sources, is more environmentally friendly than another. However, the study is narrow in scope and lacks the environmental impact assessment necessary to back up this claim.
