The uphill struggle of greening small businesses
In the current deregulatory climate, small businesses are frequently portrayed as victims of environmental red tape. But a recent study for the charity Groundwork suggests that most have had few encounters with environmental laws. It found their knowledge of legislation to be "appallingly low", while most remain unconvinced about the cost savings to be won through environmental initiatives. A further study by Business in the Environment and Coopers & Lybrand has helped to identify the costs and barriers facing small firms in embracing voluntary environmental management systems - hurdles which a new grant scheme will help them to overcome.
