Landfill design guidance leaves practitioners unhappy

The Department of the Environment (DoE) has confirmed its intention to move towards "bioreactor" landfills despite conceding in a new Waste Management Paper that they are not a practicable option for the foreseeable future.1 The guidance has provoked disquiet among operators and regulators who feel that vital technical knowledge to underpin the bioreactor concept is lacking. A landfill forum to continue the debate attracted support at a recent seminar on the guidance.
