Guidance on averting water pollution from chemical fires

A guidance note setting out measures which operators of hazardous installations should take to prevent pollution of watercourses by contaminated fire-fighting water was issued by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on 6 November.1 The guidance is generally non-prescriptive, and concern about the costs of installing permanent fire-water containment systems may have steered the HSE away from recommending these as a general requirement for chemical companies.
