Bjerregaard hints at Treaty reform on environmental taxes

A possible bid by the European Commission to amend the EC Treaty so as to allow majority voting on economic instruments intended to protect the environment was hinted at by Environment Commissioner Ritt Berregaard during a speech to the Royal Society of Arts on 2 November. Ways of improving enforcement of EC laws, citizens' environmental rights and voluntary agreements with business are among the other major themes on which she intends to work.
