UK strives to block EC limits on nitrate in vegetables

In a battle to counter EC proposals to limit the nitrate content of lettuce, the Government has proclaimed that nitrate intakes present no health risk to UK consumers. But a study by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAFF) has found that some people are exceeding the acceptable daily intake (ADI) for the compound - a safety level that has just been confirmed by an EC scientific committee on food.
