MEPs block progress of waste shipment rules
The European Parliament has refused to give an opinion on a European Commission proposal to amend the EC's existing rules on transfrontier shipments of waste to bring them into line with an international decision to ban all exports of hazardous wastes to non-OECD countries. MEPs say that the proposal would leave open loopholes, and they are prepared to hold up its passage through the legal machinery until the Commission accepts their case.
