Jail sentence for operator of illegal tyre dump

An illegal waste tyre disposal operation in Middlesborough has ended with the operator being sentenced to 30 months in prison. The case illustrates how rapidly hazardous quantities of waste tyres can accumulate when companies in the disposal chain fail to observe their "duty of care".

The case began last May, when Tees Storage complained to Cleveland County Council about fire risks from a tyre dump which had been set up on a neighbouring property in Middlesborough Dock.

Officers from the waste regulation authority (WRA) who visited the site were greeted by Michael Owen, who handed them a business card in the name Manchester Tyre Shredding and told them that he intended to export 3,000 tonnes of shredded tyres per week
