Record ozone depletion predicted over Europe and America

Scientists in Europe and the USA have warned that record ozone depletion may occur over the northern hemisphere this spring. The warnings coincide with the release of a United Nations report predicting that increased levels of ultra-violet radiation light will have severe consequences for human health and unpredictable effects on the environment.

The findings of two groups of scientists, working independently in Europe and the USA, are consistent in showing that the atmosphere above the northern hemisphere this spring is highly disturbed. Both groups issued interim warnings that physical and chemical conditions in the stratosphere were likely to mean record ozone depletion in the next few months.
