Largest fine yet for river pollution offences

A Leicestershire company has been fined £3000 for polluting a brook. The fine, which resulted from a case brought by Severn-Trent Water Authority, is the largest to be imposed on a firm for river pollution offences since the Authority was set up in 1974.

NCC (Rexo) Ltd of Coalville were fined £750 on each of four charges of allowing polluting matter to enter Snibston Brook and the River Sence. The company, which carbonises coal for fuel, had permitted pollutants to enter the brook from its holding lagoons.
