The infrastructure pipeline is dominated by major roads schemes, with Highways England steering a growing number of projects through the planning system. Isabella Kaminski examines the environmental hurdles the agency must overcome to deliver the projects and the work the schemes are likely to generate for consultancies

There are always many big infrastructure projects in development in England and Wales, but the pipeline is currently dominated by a considerable number related to roads. A look at the fast-track planning regime for major works reveals 22 projects put forward by Highways England, which is responsible for operating, maintaining and improving England’s motorways and major A roads. That is as many roads schemes as have been approved by the transport secretary in total since 2014.
