New government conservation guidance has watered down protections for some of Scotland’s internationally important wetlands, according to environmentalists.

Species-rich wetlands are protected under the international Ramsar Convention, especially as a waterfowl habitat, but a policy note posted on the Scottish government’s site at the end of January appears to have weakened their standing in planning matters, campaigners fear.
