Staffing tumult and the pressures of Brexit are threatening the quality of DEFRA’s work, according to the National Audit Office (NAO).

Its latest report on the department, published yesterday, highlighted how the DEFRA and its delivery bodies are under “significant strain” and facing “a major challenge leading up to EU Exit. The core department has been drawing in staff from its arm’s-length bodies to cope with the additional workload, potentially putting its environmental and other non-EU Exit work at risk,” says the report.
