SEPA names best and worst run industrial sites

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has given ENDS access to information on the best and worst run industrial sites under its operator and pollution risk appraisal (OPRA) scheme. BP Chemicals, Arjo Wiggins and EPR are among the sites considered by SEPA to be worst run, while Syngenta, Shell and Exxon have the best-run sites.

SEPA has been slowly catching up with the Environment Agency in England and Wales in publishing information on the state of the environment. In 2003, SEPA published an inventory of industrial sources of pollution following the Agency's example set in 1999 (ENDS Report 341, p 5).

The Environment Agency first published information on its OPRA scheme in 2002. The scheme was introduced in 1997 to provide inspectors with a tool to assess the risks posed by industrial sites, and was originally limited to integrated pollution control (ENDS Report 331, pp 19-23).
