Gummer wants recycling plan from newspaper industry
The failure of a voluntary agreement by the newspaper industry to boost its use of recycled fibre has prompted the Government to try again. On 2 November, Environment Secretary John Gummer told national newspaper publishers to come up with a recycling plan or be forced to act by legislation. Critics, including the Government's business advisers, say that the recycling target is weak and should be put on a statutory footing straight away.
