Chemicals sector grasps at structures for sustainability

Economic, societal and regulatory pressures are converging on the European chemical industry forcing major restructuring and a reorientation of its lobby organisations. In the UK, the Chemical Industries Association is among those urging the industry to lift itself from short-term preoccupations to become a partner in the quest for sustainability - and to grasp the "once in a lifetime opportunity" represented by REACH, the proposed EU regime on the testing and control of chemicals. The initiatives unleashed, including the new Chemistry Leadership Council and the CIA's sustainability principles and goals, are overshadowing the long-standing Responsible Care programme (see box ) which appears no longer to be up to the task in hand.
