Priority substances come to N Ireland

Northern Ireland transposed the EU Priority Substances Directive into legislation in February

Northern Ireland transposed the EU Priority Substances Directive into legislation in February.1 The directive sets limits for hazardous chemicals in water bodies.

The new regulations also specify how the Northern Ireland Environment Agency should classify the ecological and chemical status of water bodies under the Water Framework Directive.

The agency has classified all water bodies to the criteria (ENDS Report 420, p 38) but the Department of Environment in Northern Ireland has included it to ensure legal certainty on the process.
