McAnenly Quarries Ltd has been fined £12,500 for polluting a river with silt

McAnenly Quarries Ltd has been fined £12,500 for polluting a river with silt.

The company, based in Carrickmore, County Tyrone, pleaded guilty at Omagh magistrates court on 14 January to polluting the Drumnakilly river, contrary to article 7(1)(a) of the Water (Northern Ireland) Order 1999.

Following a report from a member of the public, a Northern Ireland Environment Agency officer visited the river in January 2009, finding it silty. The source was traced to the McAnenly quarry in Drumnakilly.

The company declined to comment.
