Ship-to-ship transfer regulations delayed

Regulations on transferring oil between ships has been delayed for another six months.

A tanker after delivering fuel (CC AS 3.0 BoH)The entry into force of regulations restricting the transfer of oil between ships in UK territorial waters has been delayed by six months, for the second time.

The Merchant Shipping (Ship-to-Ship Transfers) Regulations 2010 were published in April last year and were initially due to enter force the following October. They ban transfers and fuelling operations outside harbour authority waters. Only licensed harbours may allow the activities, which have considerable potential to pollute.
