Global deal would resolve biofuel doubts

The Nuffield Council on Bioethics has released a major report on bioethics that will both please and annoy the biofuels industry. An international standard on biofuels has also been issued.

An international agreement protecting ma­jor carbon stocks is the best way to ad­dress biofuels’ land use change impacts, ac­cording to a report from the Nuffield Council on Bioethics.1

The report, issued in April, was originally meant to focus on the environmental and ethical impacts of second-generation biofuels – those made from non-food crops and wastes (ENDS Report, January 2010). However, it has ended up tackling biofuels’ more general problems.
