Fukushima delays UK nuclear deadlines

Streamlined generic design assessments for two new nuclear reactors due to be finished on 31 June 2011 will be delayed

Streamlined generic design assessments (GDA) for two new nuclear reactors due to be finished on 31 June 2011 will be delayed to take account of lessons from the Fukushima nuclear disaster in March.

Mike Weightman, head of the new Office of Nuclear Regulation (ONR) confirmed “we will not now draw conclusions from our assessments [for Westinghouse’s AP-1000 and EDF/Areva’s European Pressurised Water Reactor designs] in June 2011 as planned”.

ONR said time was needed to digest a report by Dr Weightman on Fukushima’s implications for the UK, due in September.
