DEFRA to speed up catchment improvement

The government has agreed with NGOs to speed up efforts to meet EU water quality targets. But many details are unclear.

The environment department (DEFRA) has staved off a judicial review from NGOs by reaching agreement with WWF and the Angling Trust on speeding up actions to meet environmental targets under the EU Water Framework Directive.

In April, it issued an eight-page statement outlining the agreement saying “more action is desirable at catchment level”.1

It will fund the Environment Agency to run pilots aimed at “vigorously” improving the quality of ten catchments so they achieve “good ecological status”, a requirement of the directive.
