Hertfordshire County Council announced on 28 April that Veolia is its preferred bidder to build a 352,000 tonne-per-year incinerator to dispose of the municipal waste.
The plant will be built on a council-owned site near Hatfield and will begin operation in March 2016.
The council selected Veolia over Eon, which had planned to build a plant on land near Radlett, belonging to Larfarge.
A cabinet meeting decided on the Veolia option as Eon’s proposal was found to be located in a source protection zone for groundwater abstractions for public water supply. The area, known as Harper Lane, is close to boreholes used by Veolia Central Water, formerly known as Three Valleys.
