Contaminated land capital grants slashed

English councils are facing a huge cut in contaminated land funding

English councils are facing a huge cut in contaminated land funding. The 2011/12 budget for the Contaminated Land Capital Grant Programme has been slashed to £4.35m; nearly 80% down on the original allocation for 2010/11.

The programme channels government funding to councils for the investigation of potentially contaminated land and site remediation, under part 2A of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Funding for 2010/11 was initially £17.5m, with a further £2.4m allocated for special sites. It  was then cut to £10m for councils and £1.9m for special sites (ENDS Green Consultancy Review 2010, pp 5-8).
