Government relies on EU ETS to tackle aviation’s climate impacts

The government’s scoping document on a sustainable aviation framework leaves responsibility for tackling climate change largely to the EU emissions trading scheme. Travel alternatives such as video-conferencing get a passing mention

“Britain’s aviation industry should be able to grow, but not at any price,” said transport secretary Philip Hammond,  launching the government’s sustainable aviation scoping document at the end of March.1

The aim is to develop a long-term aviation policy integrated with the government’s goals of delivering sustainable economic growth, tackling climate change and protecting the environment, he said.
