N Ireland to streamline industrial rules

A white paper by the Department of Environment Northern Ireland offers plans to modernise the province’s approach to industrial regulation, and bring in civil sanctions for environmental crimes

The Department of Environment Northern Ireland (DoENI) is consulting on modernising the province’s approach to industrial regulation and enforcement. The proposals are contained in a short white paper published on 24 March.1

It may adopt civil sanctions and a simplified, risk-based environmental permitting regime, bringing Northern Ireland more into line with England and Wales. The Scottish Environment Protection Agency began consulting on similar plans in December (ENDS Report 431, p 37?).
