The energy and climate department (DECC) is to restrict energy retailers’ access to smart meter data, according to its implementation strategy published on 30 March.1
The strategy it sets is largely as was proposed in DECC’s smart meter roll-out consultation last year (ENDS Report 428, pp 48-49?).
The mass roll-out of 53 million smart meters to 30 million UK homes and businesses will start in April 2014 and must be finished by 2019. The new computerised devices encourage energy efficiency by displaying real-time energy usage data in pounds and pence.
