UK seafood industry acts on fish discards

Plans for a voluntary code of conduct on seafood sustainability and product labelling announced

Fishing boat. Credit: Glyn Baker, CCASA2ClientEarth, the environmental law organisation, has brought together leading UK retailers and seafood suppliers to form the Sustainable Seafood Coalition (SSC), aiming to improve sustainability of the seafood supply chain.

The coalition plans to take action on seafood sourcing, data collection and labelling in advance of any reform of the European Union’s Common Fisheries Policy. It will also encourage consumers to eat a wider variety of seafood, especially underutilised or commonly discarded fish species.
