Milk sector reports on environmental quick wins

The dairy industry has delivered on some of its environmental promises but take-up of anaerobic digestion is disappointing.

Milk bottlesSteps have been taken to reduce the environmental impacts of England’s milk sector, says a report published by the dairy industry.

This monitors progress to 2010 on green goals set in the 2008 milk roadmap, a voluntary agreement between dairy farmers, processors and retailers brokered by the environment department (DEFRA).

Improving the business performance of dairy farms also reduces their environmental impacts, finds the report. Farms with the lowest production costs have the lowest carbon footprint because they can produce more milk from fewer animals.
