European Commission considers plastic bags ban

The European Commission asks for public input on Europe-wide action on plastic carrier bags.

Plastic bagsThe European Commission has launched a consultation on how to reduce the use of plastic carrier bags across Europe. All options are on the table, even an EU-wide ban, environment commissioner Janez Potocnik said on Wednesday 18 May.

European states have taken different measures to tackle rising plastic bag use and the resulting pollution. Ireland and Denmark have bag taxes, while French and Belgian retailers charge a fee that goes towards collection and recycling.
