High NOx emissions from lorries could set back compliance

Dutch researchers have confirmed that lorries may emit far more nitrogen oxides (NOx) on city streets than the latest pollutant limits allow.1

They attached portable emissions monitoring devices to seven vehicles that supposedly met the current Euro V limit. But when driven along city streets, the vehicles emitted almost four times more NOx than was expected from their test results.

Four Euro III lorries, which would have been sold between October 2000 and October 2005, were analysed separately. Their on-road emissions were found to be 20-40% higher than previously estimated.
