Olympics food packaging to be compostable

All non-recyclable food packaging for the London 2012 Olympic Park will be made from compostable bioplastics to help meet a zero-landfill pledge, says the National Non-Food Crops Centre

All non-recyclable food packaging for the London 2012 Olympic Park will be made from compostable bioplastics to help meet a zero-landfill pledge, says the National Non-Food Crops Centre (NNFCC).

The NNFCC drew up a specification for compostable packaging for the Olympics with the Waste & Resources Action Programme, and has helped source suppliers for the 2012 London Olympics.

Starch or cellulose-based bioplastics used to package food will be independently certified as compostable under the EN 13432, the agreed European standard for compostability. Conventional PET bottles will be recycled.
