Regulations on ownership of private sewers finally laid

The ownership of private sewers in England and Wales will be transferred to water and sewerage firms

The ownership of private sewers in England and Wales will be transferred to water and sewerage firms, eight years after the government gained powers to require the change.

At the end of April, draft regulations were laid before both houses of Parliament.1 These say ownership of private sewers and lateral drains will automatically transfer on 1 October. Ownership of private pumping stations will transfer in 2016. The regulations are still subject to debate, but are expected to come into force on 1 July.
