Call for Europe-wide footprint standards

A report has recommended that the EU should have a universal standard for measuring and reporting products’ carbon footprints

The EU should develop a universal standard for measuring and reporting products’ carbon footprints, according to a report on the single market for European Commission president José Manuel Barroso.1

The report warns of a “proliferation of national approaches” to low-carbon technologies and products, and says national labels could fragment the market.

A single approach could be difficult to achieve, as national ecolabels such as the Nordic Swan have had more success than the EU Flower label.
